Oct 19, 2012 @ 8:00pm
The documentary From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale is about how creative expression helped to foster community in the Bronx, and about how people used and are using that as a resource for cultural and civic renewal. Concluding its story in the present, From Mambo to Hip Hop will explore how the people of the South Bronx, working with so little in the way of material resources, saved themselves and their community, and contributed so much to the world’s popular culture. It features many of the leading performers of these musical genres: Ray Barretto, Eddie Palmieri, Orlando Marín, Bobby Sanabria, Willie Colón, Charlie Chase and Grandmaster Caz.
This documentary was directed by noted filmmaker Henry Chalfant (Style Wars, Flyin’ Cut Sleeves) and co-produced by Elena Martínez and Steve Zeitlin. It was edited by Benh Zeitlin, the director of the award-winning feature film, Beasts of the Southern Wild. The film won the 2007 ALMA Award for Best Television Documentary.
