Maritime Music in the Bronx

Today’s program will celebrate the Bronx’s most famous maritime connection—the writer Herman Melville, who is the author or seafaring stories, most notably, Moby Dick—is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery. The program will begin with a performance at the Hunts Point Riverside Park amphitheater by the Brooklyn Blowhards, who pay sea shanties and whaling songs set to avant garde jazz. Next door to the park is Rocking the Boat, where students learn woodworking skills to build boats. They will take audience members on boat rides along the Bronx River. Afterwards the Bronx Trolley will take patrons to Woodlawn Cemetery for a walking tour which will include the gravesites of Melville and Admiral Farrugut, among others. The Brooklyn Blowhards will join the tour for some acoustic selections at some of the gravesites. The program will conclude with the Bronx Trolley stopping at the Bronx Beer Hall so patrons can “wet their whistle with some grog.”
