Sandra Maria Esteves

Sandra Maria Esteves, known as La Madrina (The Godmother) of Nuyorican Poetry. She has published several poetry collections including Bluestown Mockingbird Mambo (Arte Público Press 1990) and Yerba Buena (Greenfield Review Press 1980). Her poems have been anthologized in various places including The Afro-Latin@ Reader, Herencia: The Anthology of Hispanic Litera- ture, In Other Words: Literature by Latinas in the United States, The Heath Anthology of American Literature and Aloud: Voices from the Nuyorican Poets Café among a host of others. Sandras’s many awards include a Pregones Theater/NEA Master Artist Award, the Con Tinta Award from Acentos/AWPand Poetry Fellowship from the New York Foundation of the Arts.
