Chief Joseph Chatoyer Dance Group

The Chief Joseph Chatoyer Dance Group is inspired by Vincentian (Garifuna) William Brown, who is considered the first “black” playwright in the United States. He owned and operated the African Grove Theater, located at Mercer and Bleecker St. in the early 1820’s.
Chief Joseph Chatoyer Garifuna Folkloric Ballet (CJC) continues the legacy of William Brown’s contribution to arts and culture of New York City. CJC was founded in January 2009 by dancer, choreographer and cultural activist Felix Gamboa, who also serves as its director. Felix migrated to the United States at the age of sixteen, bringing with him a relentless passion for the Garifuna culture. CJC has toured New York and Central America.
